The Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA), now fully in effect, marks a significant advancement in the standard of care for individuals diagnosed with lymphedema—a chronic and often debilitating condition caused by lymphatic system dysfunction. For the first time, Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with lymphedema under approved ICD-10 codes (including I89.0, I97.2, I97.89, and Q82.0) are eligible to receive coverage for compression garments and bandaging supplies prescribed as part of their medical treatment. Covered items include three daytime compression garments every six months per affected body part (custom or ready-to-wear) and two nighttime garments every two years, with accessories and bandages reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
To ensure approval and timely reimbursement, healthcare providers must supply clear documentation detailing the patient’s diagnosis, the medical necessity for compression, and specific garment recommendations. PCMS Advisors supports clinicians and practices by streamlining this documentation process and helping ensure patients receive high-quality compression solutions. This law not only improves patient outcomes through consistent access to therapy but also reduces long-term complications and healthcare costs associated with unmanaged lymphedema. Together, we’re turning advocacy into action—and improving lives one compression garment at a time.
